MSI AGILITY GD73 Review

Mousepads. We all need them, all buy them, all use them. Buy well and it goes unnoticed, buy poorly and it causes desk setup headaches. The AGILITY GD73 is MSI’s attempt to slot itself onto the desks of everyday gamers and it’s a plain one. No RGB, no hard surface, no wrist rest. Just a big cloth mat sold on the basics. That’s not a knock on it by the way but it does set the bar. Do the basics well and price it right, or get lost in the crowd.

Design

Visually the GD73 remains muted and other than a sizeable MSI motif on the left side, is purposely plain. But that’s the point, designed to be the basis for any good setup, the GD73 focuses on mastering the basics and leaving the more exciting products to worry about the flair. Think of it like a trusty plain white t-shirt. Every good outfit needs a sturdy, dependable base layer and a desk setup is no different. It’s the standard full-desk size too, so it’ll happily swallow a keyboard and mouse and matches the footprint of other typical options on the market.

The surface gets a splash-proof, stain-resistant coating, so the inevitable knocked drink beads up and wipes off instead of leaving a stain and the edges are stitched rather than raw hemmed to help fraying. Neither are massively ground-breaking features but they’re the sensible touches that you only really appreciate once a cheaper pad has fallen apart on you.

At 3mm the GD73 is on the thinner side and there is a real chance for the GD73 to telegraph any dirt underneath. There’s no thicker option or alternative material available, what you see is what you get. You do get a choice of size: the full-desk GD73 here, or the compact AGILITY GD23, which wraps the same silk surface into a 320 x 220 mm footprint for tighter setups or mouse-only duty. It’s the same pad at heart, just scaled down, so it comes down to how much desk you’re willing to give up.

Alternative Mousepad Choice

MSI AGILITY GD23

If the 900mm GD73 is more desk than you’ve got, the GD23 is the same idea in miniature. It uses the identical silk surface, natural rubber base and stitched edges, just shrunk to a 320 x 220 mm footprint that suits a tighter setup or a mouse-only patch beside the keyboard. At 120g it’s light enough to roll up and chuck in a bag too, so it doubles nicely as a travel pad for a laptop or a LAN.

Buy This If:
Desk space is tight, or you only want to pad the mouse area rather than the whole desk. You get the GD73’s surface and finish in a far smaller, more portable size.
Main Tradeoff:
There’s a lot less room to move. Low-sensitivity players making big sweeps will run out of pad quickly, and there’s no space to sit a keyboard on it like the full-size GD73.

Performance

MSI sells the surface as silky and low-friction, perfect for those looking for minimal resistance for those long sweeping movements and in reality that fits the bill. The material finish wants you to flick fast and glide far without much effort, which low-sensitivity players should love. The flip side is stopping power. When you need to slam the cursor still on a flick there’s less to grab onto, and anyone who likes planting the mouse with precision might find it a touch slippy at times.

For day-to-day desktop work it should feel quick and satisfying. For gaming it ultimately comes down to preference, for those who enjoy mousepads that allow for gliding under low resistance this is a solid pick. For those who want more bite this is likely not the best choice.

The natural rubber base does the usual anti-slip job, and on something this big there’s so much of it gripping the desk that it simply doesn’t budge. The stitched edges and the wipe-clean coating mean it should handle real desk life far better than a bare budget pad. Spills bead up instead of sinking in, and the edges won’t start peeling and fraying six months down the line. It’s not bulletproof, every cloth pad slowly collects grime and loses a little glide as it ages but the AGILITY GD73 and by extension the AGILITY GD23 do enough to offset this.
