A monitor arm is one of those upgrades that sounds boring on paper and then completely changes how your desk feels to sit at. MSI clearly agrees, because it has just widened its gaming accessories range with two new ones, and both are on shelves in the UK right now.
The MPG MT201RG and MPG MT201DRG cover the two obvious use cases: one screen or two. Both use gas springs for adjustment, both have RGB lighting running through the arm itself, and both are aimed squarely at people who want to maximise desk real estate. Here’s what MSI has announced.
MSI MPG MT201RG: One Screen, Up To 49 Inches
The MT201RG is the single arm of the pair, and it’s the more accommodating of the two on screen size. MSI rates it for displays up to 49 inches, which is generous enough to cover the big super ultra-wides that most can’t and it’ll carry up to 20kg of monitor.
Mounting runs through the usual VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) patterns at 75x75mm and 100x100mm, with a quick release plate so the screen can come off without you having to take the whole thing apart. There’s full motion adjustment for height, tilt, swivel and rotation, and the gas spring means nudging a heavy display into position shouldn’t feel like a workout.
MSI has also built in cable management to keep the cables out of sight, plus 20 dynamic RGB lighting modes if you want the arm to join in with the rest of the setup.
MSI MPG MT201DRG: Doubling Up
The MT201DRG is the dual version, holding two displays from 17 to 35 inches side by side, again at up to 20kg per screen. The hardware is otherwise much the same story: premium gas spring arms, full motion adjustment, VESA quick release and the same dynamic RGB lighting treatment.
That 35 inch ceiling per screen is the obvious trade-off for going dual, though is about as much monitor as most desks can physically take anyway. If you’re running two 27 inch panels and a keyboard, freeing up the space those stands were eating is the whole point.
Both arms can be fitted with either a desk clamp or a grommet mount depending on how your desk is built, so there’s a bit of flexibility in how permanent you want the install to be.
Are They Worth A Look?
On paper, the MT201RG is the more interesting of the two. Arms that will genuinely take a 49 inch screen at 20kg aren’t especially common, and if you’ve been eyeing up one of the huge curved panels that ships with a stand the size of a small table, that’s the one worth reading up on.
The dual arm is the more conventional proposition, but it’s also the one that solves the bigger problem. Two stands next to each other waste a ridiculous amount of desk, and getting both screens level and properly aligned is a fiddly job without an arm doing the work for you.
Both arms are on sale in the UK now, with the dual MT201DRG carrying the higher of the two price tags.
