GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition

The main focus of this build is AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE. This graphics card has a rather interesting history, as it was initially released as a regional exclusive in China, with it only being available in other regions via designated prebuilt systems.

However, after the GPU received plenty of interest from PC gaming enthusiasts across the globe, AMD decided to launch the RX 7900 GRE in other regions too. As a card that is designed for top-tier 1440p gaming, this card helps to bridge the large price gap between the RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT. In turn, the RX 7900 GRE conveniently adds more competition for NVIDIA’s RTX 4000 SUPER GPUs.

For this build, we’ve picked out the ASUS TUF Gaming variant, as this model provides enhanced cooling and clock speeds compared to the base RX 7900 GRE. Also, the aesthetic will go hand-in-hand with our ASUS TUF Gaming motherboard, leading to a more unified look.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X

Our CPU of choice is the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, making this an AMD-centric build. After a rocky start, the Ryzen 5 7600X has proven to be a reliable mid-range processor, especially in gaming scenarios.

Featuring six cores and twelve threads, as well as clock speeds up to 5.3GHz, this CPU can handle a range of titles at 1440p high settings. On top of this, the Ryzen 5 7600X has some legs at 4K, leading to well-balanced performance when paired with a mid-range graphics card like the RX 7900 GRE.

Like most Ryzen 7000 processors, one of the biggest weaknesses of this CPU at launch was the price compared to its Intel counterpart. However, a series of price drops has led to the Ryzen 5 7600X being one of the best value CPUs on the market, thanks to its overclocking capabilities and strong efficiency.

CPU Cooler: DeepCool AK400 Digital

To keep the CPU at a moderate temperature, we’ve picked up the DeepCool AK400 Digital. This air-based cooler is budget-friendly and provides ample cooling for a mid-range build while contributing to the aesthetics of the build.

With a single-tower design, the AK400 Digital is very easy to install and will have little issues fitting into a wide array of cases. In addition, the AK400 Digital remains fairly quiet, and the single 1850RPM fan is enough to ensure plenty of airflow alongside the various pre-installed fans in our case.

However, the main selling point of this particular model is the integrated LCD, which can display important system information, such as CPU temperature and usage. This means we won’t have to constantly open software to monitor the system, making it easier to prevent major technical issues.

Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WiFi

For the motherboard, the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WiFi is affordable and offers versatile connectivity options, making it a strong choice for any mid-range system. This ATX motherboard supports RTX 4000 and Radeon 7000 GPUs, along with Gen5 SSDs and multiple Gen4 M.2 drives.

Combined with support for up to 128GB of DDR5 memory, this motherboard has no issues accommodating a PC filled with high-end parts, with room to spare for numerous upgrades. Plus, the TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WiFi also includes several heatsinks, which help to protect various components and offer a more premium appearance.

SSD: Crucial P3 Plus

When it comes to storage, speed is king. However, many of the best SSDs on the market offer high read and write speeds that aren’t required for strong gaming metrics, which means that most PC builds can utilise a slower drive without having a major impact on performance. Because of this, we’ve decided to save some money with the SSD in this build by opting for the Crucial P3 Plus.

Featuring read speeds of up to 5000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3600MB/s, this Gen4 SSD is on the slower side but substantial enough to support a wide range of games at 1440p high settings. Regarding capacity, 1TB is the minimum we’d suggest for modern PCs, as this is sufficient storage for a collection of games with a mixture of AAA and Indie titles.

As an M.2 drive, the P3 Plus is also a breeze to install, as it simply slots into the dedicated slot on the motherboard. For peace of mind, this SSD comes with a 5-year warranty and a touted endurance of 220 terabytes written (TBW), meaning this storage will last for several years.

Case: Montech King 95 Pro

The PC case that will hold all of our components together is the Montech King 95 Pro, a cheap but stylish chassis that showcases each part of this build. Fish-tank PC cases have flooded the market in recent years, but the Montech King 95 Pro stands out from the crowd due to its incredible value.

Despite being cheaper than most fish-tank designs, the King 95 Pro is packaged with a whopping six RGB fans, so there is no need to purchase additional fans, especially when paired with a high-end CPU cooler. Additionally, the dual-chamber design provides plenty of space for a range of components while simplifying cable management.

As a result, the Montech King 95 Pro will have no issues supporting a PC build filled with the latest generation of hardware, with plenty of clearance to house future additions and upgrades.

PSU: Thermaltake Smart BM3 750W

To keep costs to a minimum, we decided to pick up the Thermaltake Smart BM3 750W, a budget-oriented power supply that includes a range of luxurious features. By cutting some corners elsewhere, this 750W PSU offers price-conscious buyers the chance to utilise an ATX 3.0 design.

Unfortunately, the RX 7900 GRE won’t be able to take advantage of the single PCI-E 5.0 power connector. However, this PSU will be able to support future graphics cards. One feature this build can benefit from is the smart zero-fan mode, which turns off the integrated 120mm fan during less intense workloads, reducing noise pollution and increasing longevity.

These premium features for the price come at the expense of cable management, as the Smart BM3 takes advantage of a semi-modular design. Although, all of the attached connections are required for the PC anyway, which means the limited versatility is less of an inconvenience than you’d first expect.

Our testing results show that the RX 7900 GRE and the Ryzen 5 7600X synergise well, offering great performance at 1440p and decent legs at 4K. The system we’ve put together for this PC build is more than ample for a smooth and lag-free gaming experience.
