The Best ASUS Graphics Cards

1. ASUS ROG Strix RTX 4090 BTF OC

MPI_Hyperion + 4090 ROG STRIX BTF
Original Review by Harry Coleman: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Review (Founders Edition Benchmarks)

The ROG Strix version of the RTX 4090 is one of the strongest AIB (add-in board) GPUs available. With a triple-fan shroud designed to keep thermals down to a minimum, plenty of RGB and an overclocked boost speed up to 2.64GHz, the ROG Strix 4090 BTF OC is incredibly appealing.

With the introduction of reverse connector motherboards in early 2024, ASUS has gone the extra mile to accommodate the innovative technology with a branch of graphics cards known as BTF. These unique variants of NVIDIA RTX 4000 cards are designed to work with BTF motherboards and use a high-power finger towards the centre of the card to minimise cabling across your build.

And what better card to turn into a cable-free variant than the RTX 4090? Since its launch at the end of 2022, the RTX 4090 remains the most powerful desktop consumer graphics card you can buy. Anything you can throw at the RTX 4090, it can handle. Whether it’s 4K gaming, ray tracing, or intense workstation tasks, the RTX 4090 is designed to provide the performance you need for a top-end enthusiast build.

We’ve assembled a few systems with ASUS BTF components; so far, they’re some of the cleanest-looking systems you can build. While MSI PROJECT ZERO and Gigabyte PROJECT STEALTH solutions look equally tidy, ASUS BTF graphics cards go the extra mile to achieve a fully cable-free system.

The only major caveat to consider with the ROG Strix 4090 BTF OC is that it is incredibly pricey. Due to a lack of stock, the RTX 4090 has already seen several price increases up to the $2000 mark, and non-MSRP versions like this ROG Strix card push the price up considerably further.

3. ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti SUPER BTF White

MPI_ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti SUPER BTF

Much like the ROG Strix 4090, this TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti SUPER card is also a BTF version, meaning there are no physical power connectors on the GPU. Furthermore, this is an incredibly sleek white version sporting the signature TUF Gaming branding. More manufacturers have started to offer white graphics cards, so it’s nice to see ASUS providing a few different versions in their signature branding.

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER has become a top-rated graphics card for mid-range and top-end systems. The original RTX 4070 Ti launched at a price point that was too high considering the specs. But with the SUPER refresh, the RTX 4070 Ti is much better positioned against the competition. With 16GB of GDDR6X VRAM, a 256-bit memory bus, and a slight enhancement to CUDA and RT cores, this GPU has a solid set of specs.

SpecificationASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti SUPER BTF White

Core Clock Speed2.34GHz
Boost Clock Speed2.64GHz
CUDA Cores8448
RT Cores66
Tensor Cores264
Power Consumption285W
GPU Length357mm

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER aligns closely with the RX 7900 XT on the performance front. While the latter is generally better with rasterised performance, technologies like DLSS and Frame Gen can help uplift frames and improve smoothness where available. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER also thrives in ray traced gameplay, offering exceptional lighting and shadows in supported games.

I would argue that the most significant weakness of the TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is its price point compared to other RTX 4070 Ti SUPER GPUs. Because this card utilises a proprietary power solution specific to ASUS BTF motherboards, it comes with a hefty premium likely to be a point of contention for prospective buyers.

Original Review by Jay Harris: ASUS TUF Gaming RX 7900 GRE OC Edition Review & Benchmarks

Much like the ASUS TUF RX 7900 XT, this variant of the RX 7900 GRE comes with a triple-fan shroud, keeping thermals to a minimum. Aesthetically, most TUF Gaming cards are pretty similar. The industrial grey design blends in well with darker-themed builds, and the RGB lighting strip adds some welcome flair, making up for components lacking any lighting.

AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is one of the more recent additions to the Radeon 7000 range. Originally released as a China-exclusive, primarily for prebuilts and system integrators, AMD decided to open up availability worldwide in February 2024. At $50 more than the RX 7800 XT, the RX 7900 GRE is a solid competitor just on pricing alone.

5. ASUS Dual RTX 4070 SUPER

MPI_ASUS Dual 4070 SUPER
Original Review by Aled Wheeler: ASUS Dual RTX 4070 SUPER Review & Benchmarks

ASUS’ Dual OC model of the RTX 4070 SUPER is one of the smaller designs. It has a two-fan shroud, allowing it to slot into a smaller PC case without issue. The card features a space-style design, primarily dark grey, with a lighter livery surrounding the fans. This is also an OC model, so the boost clock speed is slightly overclocked, improving performance across various titles.

The NVIDIA RTX 4070 SUPER was the first graphics card released during the RTX 4000 SUPER refresh in January 2024. As a slight upgrade to the original RTX 4070, NVIDIA equipped the SUPER iteration with more CUDA, RT and Tensor cores. Admittedly, these are the only major specs that have changed.

SpecificationASUS Dual RTX 4070 SUPER OC

Core Clock Speed1.98GHz
Boost Clock Speed2.55GHz
CUDA Cores7168
RT Cores56
Tensor Cores224
Power Consumption220W
GPU Length267mm

The memory bus and VRAM capacity have remained the same, along with pricing. This means that the RTX 4070 SUPER has retained the MSRP of the original RTX 4070 at $599, while the latter has slowly dropped to the $550/$530 mark. However, overall performance has increased, with better frames at 1440p in modern titles and a slight uplift in ray tracing capabilities, thanks to the increased RT core count.

The biggest weakness of this graphics card compared to other GPUs is its pricing. At the time of writing, the RTX 4070 SUPER is $599, about $150 more expensive than the RX 7800 XT, and over $200 more than the RX 7700 XT. As cards that perform somewhat similarly to the RTX 4070 SUPER, it may be worth considering the AMD alternatives for those looking to save some money.

6. ASUS TUF Gaming RX 7800 XT OC

MPI_7800 XT TUF Gaming

The ASUS TUF cards are similar across the board, with this particular RX 7800 XT variant sharing the same industrial grey theme across the triple-fan shroud. While having three fans is beneficial from a thermal perspective, it makes this TUF Gaming version one of the larger options, causing potential clearance issues with smaller PC cases.

The RX 7800 XT is among the strongest value graphics cards in the current Radeon 7000 lineup. This GPU was released in 2023 with an MSRP of $499. With many subsequent price drops, the RX 7800 XT is much closer to the $470 mark, with some cards even seeing a $450 price point. Because of this, the RX 7800 XT is an incredibly compelling choice for those looking to save some cash on a mid-range graphics card.

Across our testing, the RX 7800 XT is a leader in rasterised gameplay at 1440p in various titles. Thanks to its 16GB of VRAM and 256-bit memory bus, this card can also handle modern games, providing longevity in newer titles with more demanding requirements.

Overall, the biggest weakness of the RX 7800 XT is its ray tracing performance capabilities. AMD hasn’t caught up to NVIDIA regarding ray tracing, so performance generally suffers in comparison, with framerates reaching unplayable levels in specific titles. For those looking to play games with ray tracing switched on, we’d urge you to look at NVIDIA alternatives.

7. ASUS Dual Radeon RX 6650 XT OC

MPI_ASUS Dual Radeon RX 6650 XT
$539.00 at Amazon
Last updated: 2024-12-21 04:51:35 ET

The ASUS Dual version of the RX 6650 XT is quite a compact graphics card. With a two-fan shroud, the ASUS Dual RX 6650 XT OC measures 243mm long and features a slight overclock to the boost speed. The black shrouding is fairly minimalist on the design front, while the rear of the card utilises an aluminium backplate that reinforces the GPU and provides structural rigidity.

AMD’s Radeon RX 6650 XT remains a solid graphics card in the current market. As a sub-$250 GPU, the RX 6650 XT is a highly competitive option for those looking to build a more budget-oriented system. Due to the limited amount of cheap graphics cards on the market, the RX 6650 XT is a solid alternative to GPUs like the Intel Arc A750, where performance is a bit more hit-and-miss.

SpecificationASUS Dual RX 6650 XT OC
Video Memory8GB GDDR6
Memory Bus128-Bit
Core Clock Speed2.05GHz
Boost Clock Speed2.63GHz
Stream Processors2048
Ray Accelerators32
Compute Units32
Power Consumption176W
GPU Length243mm

Speaking of which, the RX 6650 XT is a solid graphics card primarily geared towards 1080p gaming. However, it has some decent legs at 1440p in older AAA games and newer Esports titles. Regarding specs, this GPU has 2048 Stream Processors, 32 Ray Accelerators and Compute Units, and a 2.63GHz boost clock speed.

Unfortunately, the most significant caveat with the RX 6650 XT is its longevity in newer games. As games become more demanding, 8GB VRAM and 128-bit memory buses aren’t enough for the latest titles, paving the way for GPUs with more VRAM and better bandwidth.

How We Tested the Best ASUS Graphics Cards

To determine which ASUS graphics card is the best option on the market, our written and benchmarking team have come together to analyse and put each card through a series of tests and benchmarks. This involves putting them through their paces within various AAA titles and workstation applications to see how they perform.

COD Warzone

In COD Warzone at 1440p with either FSR or DLSS enabled, the results from the ASUS graphics cards we’ve tested are close together. The RX 6650 XT is the weakest GPU, while the RTX 4090 is the most powerful, with a 202FPS average.

The mid-range and high-end cards offered similar results across the board, with NVIDIA GPUs outperforming AMD. The most interesting result here is the performance of the RX 6650 XT. At 1440p, this card provides more than reasonable metrics in COD Warzone despite having the weakest specs and only 8GB of VRAM. It’s an impressive GPU!

Apex Legends

In Apex Legends at 1440p high settings, we see similar results to those of COD Warzone. At the mid-range and high-end, performance is tightly knit together, leaning more toward AMD over NVIDIA. Surprisingly, the RTX 4090 was beaten out by the RX 7900 XT in this benchmark, a notable feat.

The RX 6650 XT is noticeably weak at the low end, but its average output of 130FPS is nothing to frown at. This shows how optimised Apex Legends is, making it extremely viable to play on cheaper hardware.

MPI_Apex Legends @ 1440p High Best ASUS GPUs

Fortnite

While Fortnite isn’t the most intense title, especially at 1080p, we run this benchmark to get an idea of the generational performance differences between new and old cards and to see where framerates have improved or, in some cases, not.

From the RX 7800 XT upwards, the change in framerates is negligible, with the most significant overall difference being 43FPS. This would be visible at lower performance numbers, but because the RX 7800 XT is hitting more than 300FPS in this title, you won’t see any choppiness or major drops.

These strong results continue at the low end, too, with the RX 6650 XT providing an average FPS of 264, allowing gamers to use a high refresh rate monitor for extremely smooth gameplay.
